Fursuit BDSM is something that I find quite interesting. I’ve met someone with an interest in furry play during a session, and it reminded me just how varied people’s interests can be.
One of the things I enjoy about being a Mistress in London is hearing about the different things people are interested in. Not everything is something I personally want to explore, but I still find it fascinating to learn about.
And if somebody enjoys dressing up as a furry character, good for them! I don’t think people should feel embarrassed about harmless interests that make them happy.
There is quite a lot of confusion about furries, though. Some people assume that furry fandom is automatically sexual, while others think it is the same as pet play or BDSM.
That’s not really the case.
So I thought I’d explain what fursuit BDSM means, what a fursona is, the different types of costumes people wear and how furry play can sometimes overlap with BDSM.
What Is Fursuit BDSM?
Fursuit BDSM is a term sometimes used to describe the overlap between furry costumes, animal-inspired characters and consensual BDSM activities.
However, it’s important to understand that furry fandom and BDSM are two separate things.
The furry community is largely centred around an interest in anthropomorphic animal characters. These are animals with human characteristics, such as the ability to speak, wear clothes, express human emotions or behave like people.
Think of the many animal characters you’ve seen in cartoons, films, comics and video games.
Some people enjoy drawing these characters, creating stories about them, attending conventions or making friends with others who share their interests.
Others enjoy dressing up as their own characters.
Some furries are also interested in BDSM or other forms of adult role-play.
When those interests overlap, someone might use a furry character or costume as part of a consensual BDSM scenario.
But simply being a furry doesn’t mean somebody is interested in BDSM.
I think that’s an important distinction, because people often make assumptions about interests they don’t understand.
What Is a Fursuit?
A fursuit is a costume designed to represent an anthropomorphic animal character.
Some are wonderfully detailed, with expressive faces, colourful fur and elaborate designs. Others are much simpler.
They can be inspired by real animals, such as wolves, foxes, cats and rabbits, or completely imaginary creatures.
There are several different types of fursuits.
Full Fursuits
A full fursuit usually covers the whole body and may include a character head, paws, feet, a tail and a matching body costume.
These can be quite elaborate and expensive, especially when they’re custom-made.
Some people spend years developing their character and saving for the perfect costume.
Partial Fursuits
Not everybody wants to wear a full costume.
A partial fursuit might include a head, hand paws, feet paws and a tail, worn with ordinary clothing.
This allows somebody to represent their character without wearing a full-body suit.
Simple Animal Accessories
Some people prefer something much simpler, such as ears, a tail or a mask.
These accessories can be used for costumes, character performances or role-play without requiring an elaborate outfit.
Of course, not all furries own a fursuit. Plenty enjoy the fandom through art, writing, online communities and friendships without ever dressing up.
What Is a Fursona?
One of the most interesting parts of furry fandom, in my opinion, is the idea of a fursona.
A fursona is a furry character that somebody creates to represent themselves or an aspect of their personality.
It’s a combination of the words “furry” and “persona”.
For example, somebody might create a confident, outgoing fox character even if they’re quite shy in everyday life.
Another person might choose a wolf, rabbit, dragon or an imaginary animal because they like the appearance or personality they’ve created for it.
People may give their fursonas names, personalities, backgrounds and distinctive clothing.
Some commission artwork of their characters, while others make costumes or participate in online role-playing communities.
Having a fursona doesn’t mean somebody literally believes they’re an animal.
For most people, it’s a form of creativity and self-expression.
I rather like the idea that people can invent a character and express a different side of themselves through it.
Is Furry Play the Same as Pet Play?
No, although there can be some overlap.
Furry play generally involves expressing or portraying a furry character. It might include wearing a costume, acting in character, participating in a performance or interacting with other members of the furry community.
Pet play, on the other hand, is a type of role-play in which someone takes on the behaviour or role of an animal.
In a BDSM context, pet play may involve agreed roles, rules or a power dynamic between consenting adults.
For example, someone might enjoy portraying a puppy, kitten or pony as part of a role-play arrangement.
Some people interested in pet play use animal accessories, but they don’t necessarily identify with furry fandom or have a fursona.
Likewise, somebody can be a furry without having any interest in pet play.
There are people who enjoy both, but it’s best not to assume that one interest automatically includes the other.
Personally, I think the easiest way to understand somebody’s interests is simply to ask them what they mean rather than make assumptions.
Does Being a Furry Mean Someone Is Interested in BDSM?
Absolutely not.
This is probably one of the biggest misunderstandings surrounding furry fandom.
For many people, being a furry is about creativity, friendship, costumes, art and community.
They might enjoy attending conventions, meeting other furries, creating characters or sharing artwork.
None of those activities automatically has anything to do with BDSM.
Some adults within the furry community do have an interest in BDSM, just as adults in many other communities do.
But that doesn’t mean the whole fandom should be defined by those interests.
I think people sometimes hear about an unfamiliar hobby and immediately try to categorise it as something unusual or shocking.
When you look a little closer, you often discover that people are simply enjoying themselves and expressing their creativity.
And I’m happy for them!
Why Do People Enjoy Fursuits and Furry Role-Play?
There isn’t one answer, because people are drawn to furry fandom for different reasons.
For some, it’s the creativity involved in designing a character.
For others, it’s the enjoyment of wearing a costume and bringing that character to life.
Some people like the social side, particularly the opportunity to meet others who share an interest that might not be understood by everyone around them.
And some enjoy the freedom of stepping outside their everyday identity for a little while.
I can understand that last point.
People behave differently in different environments, and a costume or character can sometimes make it easier to express a playful or confident side of their personality.
That doesn’t mean somebody is unhappy with who they are in everyday life.
Sometimes it’s simply enjoyable to pretend to be somebody else.
Fursuit BDSM, Consent and Boundaries
Whenever people are exploring adult role-play, communication is important.
That includes discussing what each person is comfortable with, what they want to avoid and whether everybody understands the agreed boundaries.
A costume doesn’t remove the need for consent.
And consent should never be assumed simply because somebody enjoys a particular character or type of clothing.
There are also practical things to think about when wearing a fursuit.
Full costumes can become very warm, and some heads or masks can limit visibility, hearing or movement.
People should be able to remove costume pieces easily, take breaks, drink water and communicate if they’re uncomfortable.
If somebody is wearing a mask that makes speaking difficult, it’s especially important to agree on a clear way of communicating beforehand.
These considerations apply to costume activities generally, not just BDSM.
I always think it’s better to discuss expectations clearly than to assume everybody has the same idea of what an experience involves.
Good communication makes it easier for people to feel comfortable expressing their interests.
Would I Consider a Fursuit BDSM Session?
I’ve encountered an interest in furry play during a session before, and I found it interesting to hear about.
It’s not something I currently advertise as a regular session offering, but I might consider a suitable request depending on what somebody had in mind.
That doesn’t mean every request will be something I want to explore.
I have my own interests, preferences and boundaries, just like everybody else.
If somebody contacts me, I appreciate them taking the time to read my current session offerings rather than assuming I provide every possible experience.
Being proactive and forward thinking is important to me.
I’ve also written about successful submissive traits, including the importance of consideration and communication.
I enjoy hearing about people’s different interests, even when they’re not necessarily something I want to participate in myself.
For me, there’s a difference between being open-minded and feeling obliged to say yes to everything.
Should People Feel Embarrassed About Being a Furry?
I don’t think people should feel ashamed of harmless interests that bring them happiness.
Everybody has hobbies and interests that somebody else might find unusual.
Some people collect things, some enjoy dressing up, some create fictional characters and others love participating in communities built around shared interests.
Furry fandom can combine several of those things.
As long as people are respectful of others and understand the importance of consent, I don’t see why enjoying a fictional animal character should automatically be something to feel embarrassed about.
Of course, nobody has to share their interests publicly if they don’t want to.
Some people prefer to keep certain hobbies private, and that’s their choice.
I just think it’s nice when people find something they enjoy and have a community where they feel comfortable.
My Final Thoughts on Fursuit BDSM
Fursuit BDSM is one example of how different interests can overlap, but it’s important not to confuse it with furry fandom as a whole.
Some furries enjoy costumes, some enjoy creating characters, some enjoy artwork and conventions, and others may also be interested in adult role-play.
There isn’t one particular way to be a furry.
And there’s certainly no reason to assume that everybody wearing an animal costume has the same interests.
I’ve always found people fascinating, and learning about different hobbies and forms of self-expression is one of the things I enjoy.
Even when something isn’t particularly for me, I’m still happy that somebody else has found something that makes them smile.
So if you’re interested in furry fandom, enjoy exploring the creative side of it, take the time to understand the communities involved and don’t feel pressured to fit somebody else’s idea of what a furry should be.
And if your interests overlap with BDSM, remember that communication, consent and respect are just as important as they are in any other adult role-play.
